How to get rid of guilt instantly
Guilt tells you that you have violated one of your own highest standards, and that you must do something immediately to ensure not doing it again. Use guilt to change your behavior. Don’t deny it or suppress it; it may come back stronger. Don’t accept the pain and live with it; you don’t have to feel inferior; instead take responsibility to correct your behavior and hold on to your standard or rule that you value. Take the following steps:
- Acknowledge that you have violated a critical standard/value you hold for yourself.
- Commit to live a life according to the values you cherish. Decide with conviction that such behavior will not happen again. Visualize in your mind dealing with the same situation but behaving according to your standards. Visualize similar situations where you behave according to your values in future.
- Since you have firmly committed not to repeat such behaviour, you have the right to let go of the guilt. Forgive yourself completely and let go of any guilt. Visualize that you are back on track in your journey of life towards success. Feel happy.
Spiritual way
- Talk to Jesus about what happened and feel sorry for it; repent and ask for his mercy. Decide, not to hurt Jesus again in the same way. (Remember that God completely accepts you and loves you unconditionally; this means, you don’t have to feel ashamed or guilty to approach God at any point of time.)
- Visualize in your mind that Jesus is touching you and healing you. Forgive yourself completely and let go of any guilt; enjoy the liberation that Jesus has given. Remember that Jesus had paid for your sins completely. Go for a confession at the earliest and receive his infinite mercy.
- Follow Jesus and live a life of purpose, joy and peace. Recall your magnificence.
More Tips
- Don’t allow others to make you feel guilty thru their criticisms, blames or judgments. It is usually their own insecurities that cause others to try and make you feel guilty. Choose right now, not to allow anyone to make you feel guilty. However, if there are some suggestions for improvement in their comments, take it in a positive way; if you have hurt others, say sorry and compensate if required.
- List the things that you are feeling guilty for in your life right now. Take action on each one using the steps above.
- Stop magnifying. Know that human beings are not perfect and are prone to make mistakes; mistakes and failures are hidden opportunities to learn, improve and grow. Ask “What can I learn from this?”
- Accept yourself. Making a mistake won’t make you a bad person. Forgive yourself and make a new start.
